"Drawing the graphics and writing the responses for using objects on characters was the most fun. The hardest part was scripting. If there weren't so many helpful types on the AGS boards I'm sure I never would have completed it. In development the most rewarding part has been the positive responses from the beta testers, and of course, my girlfriend." |

It isn't often that an AGS game of truly "cute" proportions is released, but Alasdair Beckett's Nelly Cootalot - Spoonbeaks Ahoy! certainly shows that every now and then a real gem can be produced. The premise to the game may seem like an adventure for little girls, but rest assured there is so much to this game that makes it very appealable to all players. The story is simple, a young pirate is summoned by a long dead...well, pirate, to find out where the little Spoonbills have disappeared too. With only one clue of their whereabouts, it's up to her to search the island for evidence and hopefully discover where they are and why they are there. Though simple, the story is captivating and again very "cute", there is plenty to learn about the world Nelly inhabits. The dialogue throughout the game is witty and well written. There are plenty of comedy and contemporary references, and any fan of the old Maid Marian show will get a kick from it. The puzzles range from easy to difficult, and in some places I was stumped for ages. However, every puzzle is well thought out and the solutions are very rewarding. The characters you'll meet are funny yet in most cases slightly odd, but they all have interesting information to help you on your quest. The graphics are truly unique and are a pleasure to see - the Barony could almost make a superb "land" in Disneyland! The animations are incredibly smooth, and there are plenty of them to keep the player interested. I won't say anything about the music other than it being very jolly, and the use of a special AGS module helps give it an "iMuse" feel. Besides that though, the sound effects are top notch throughout the game, and create a very memorable atmosphere. This is definitely one to play, and I'm not just saying that because I helped work on it. Beckett has created a cutesy-classic, spawned simply by the apparent love of his girlfriend? Well if that is so then it's a great success to see how love has helped build this fantastic game. Fans of classic pirate point & clicks will not be let down, but then, nobody who plays it will be! Great graphics, high jinx & engrossing gameplay throughout... 9/10 |
